Blusher brings colour and a healthy glow to your face. It’s vital that blusher should complement rather than overpower the rest of your makeup. Where you put blusher is very important and it should be built up slowly to give you a natural glow rather than a stripe of colour.
What colour blush should you pick?
A simple rule would be the fairer the skin the lighter the shade, the darker the skin the deeper the shade. In general pinks or peachy tones are a safe bet.
Blondes should try pink-shade blushers, brunettes should try rose or brownish blush, and for all those red heads, try peach-toned blushers. Make sure when applying blusher that you tap off any excess blush from your brush and build up the colour until you get the desired effect, remembering to always blend well!
Types of Blusher – There are so many choices on the market now from powder to cream to mineral powder blush! Which one should you try?
Powder Blusher – this is the most popular type of blusher – similar in consistency to pressed face powder. This works well on all skintypes especially oily skin. Powder blushers should be applied after face powder using a soft blusher brush. Tap off excess powder from your brush, look in the mirror and smile – apply the blusher to the apples of the cheeks (the rounded area that comes up when you smile) and blend in a circular motion. Use the brush to gently sweep any excess powder upwards and outwards

Cream Blusher – this type of blusher is better for drier skin types. It blends on nicely giving the skin a dewy, natural glow. Cream Blusher should be applied after applying your foundation and set with translucent powder if required. Use clean fingers or a sponge to apply this cream to the apples of the cheeks and blend in well.

Combination Powder/Cream Blush – A longer lasting blusher that goes on like a cream but dries to a powder finish. Suitable for most skin types

Blusher Tints/Gels – a water based formula applied to the cheeks for a transparent, natural glow. These can be used over your moisturiser or foundation but dry quite quickly, so blending is more difficult. They are more suited for clear skin that requires just the slightest hint of colour

Mineral Blushers – these blushers are highly refined and give a lovely finish to the skin. They work well on just about all skin types

How to apply a blusher?
Always start with a small amount of blusher and build up the colour. It is easier to add more than to remove the excess. If that does happen however, add some translucent powder over the blusher to help tone down the colour.
Be careful you don’t end up like someone stuck in the 80s – the trend then was to apply blusher high on the cheekbone sweeping upwards to the temple area. Fashion trends change but you are always safe with a natural glow to the apples of the cheeks.
If you are using a dewy foundation be sure to set the cheek area with a small amount of translucent powder before applying powder blusher – otherwise it won’t blend well. Change your colour blusher when you change your foundation – so if you are wearing tan or darker makeup you need to darken your blusher to suit.
For a more natural look apply blusher as above and then blend your foundation brush over it to remove any hard edges and to make the blusher appear like its coming through the makeup rather than sitting on top of it .
